The Ilford Jacket is a versatile style that’s modular design makes for a pattern that is simple, yet impactful. It can be customized a million different ways and really is a “choose your own adventure” type of pattern that incorporates your design sense into the project! Best of all, the pattern includes sizes XS-7X!
It features drop shoulders and comes with two sleeve options: a placketed sleeve with cuff, and an easy to sew boxy sleeve for a more relaxed vibe. It also includes two lengths as well as a bunch of pocket templates that you can mix and match! The possibilities are endless! You can wear the Ilford as a jacket or shirt depending on the fabric you use. This is a fun, skill building pattern that you will want to make/wear again and again! This pattern is for everyone and looks great on all gender expressions!
Under the guidance of our resident sewing expert, you'll learn the basics of shirt and jacket construction as you master several garment-sewing essentials.
We'll cover:
- Measuring the body accurately to create a perfect fit
- Working from a commercial pattern, including size selection, deciphering instructions, cutting from paper pattern pieces, and more
- Understanding garment sewing basics such as proper fabric prep, pinning, cutting, ironing and troubleshooting
- Becoming familiar with sewing jargon commonly found in commercial patterns
- How to construct a collar, cuffs, placketed or boxy sleeves, patch pockets, and buttonholes
- How to set sleeves
Skill Requirements
Intermediate sewing experience is required; YOU MUST BE COMFORTABLE WORKING ON A SEWING MACHINE INDEPENDENTLY and have sewn a few garments in the recent past.
Materials
The jacket pattern and materials are not included in registration fee. We have a variety of fabrics, as well as all necessary notions, available for purchase with a 10% student discount. Feel free to drop by anytime before your class, or purchase supplies the day of the workshop! You will need:
- Ilford Jacket pattern by Friday Pattern Company -- Purchase printed pattern Here
- 1.5 - 5 yards fabric depending on size and length (see size chart in the photos above). Heavy fabrics like Denim, Twill, and Canvas will make a structured jacket. Softer fabrics like Linen, Corduroy , and light wool will make a more shacket-style garment. And Flannel and Chambray will make a lighter, over-shirt kind of Ilford.
- 5-12 Buttons (any size is fine, but we recommend 1-1.5” buttons) Please note we have many more buttons available for in store purchase only
- A spool of matching all-purpose sewing thread
- 1 yard of fusible interfacing

Cost: $350 includes instruction, all necessary tools, and use of our BERNINA sewing machines; does not include pattern, fabric or notions, which will be available for purchase at our shop and during class with a 10% student discount.

Meet Your Instructor
Diana Rodgers is a fiber artist and educator who grew up on Long Island and is now based in Bronx, NY. Since receiving a BFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology, Diana has pursued three creative career paths: fashion designer, manufacturer, and sewing educator. Sewing is the common thread among all three.
Most of her days are spent teaching people of all ages how to sew, but Diana finds time to work on soft sculptures, embroideries, and quilts. Career highlights include teaching over 1000 people how to use a sewing machine, and selling her products to MoMA Design Store.
