Meet Our Founder
Brooklyn Craft Company and Brooklyn Craft Camp were founded by DIY expert Brett Bara. Brett is a Brooklyn resident and crafts professional who saw a need for fun, approachable crafts activities for creative (but busy) New Yorkers. She took her knowledge of the crafts industry, combined it with the Brooklyn DIY scene, added in delicious food, great style, and good music–and Brooklyn Craft Camp was born. Craft Camp was such a success that it spawned a larger initiative, Brooklyn Craft Company: a 1400-square-foot space in a former pencil factory offering a full schedule of modern craft and DIY classes.
Brett has been crafting practically since she was born, having been raised by parents who are crafty to the max. She spent her twenties working as a magazine writer with a side of handbag designing and wedding cake making. Later she became a crafts editor at Woman’s Day SIPS and eventually the Editor in Chief at Crochet Today magazine, which led to becoming host of the PBS television series Knit and Crochet Now.
Before launching Brooklyn Craft Company, Brett worked independently as an author, designer and DIY expert. She is the author of Sewing in a Straight Line (Potter Craft/Random House, 2011), one of the top sewing instructors on the video class site Craftsy.com, and a DIY columnist for Design Sponge. She has appeared on The Martha Stewart show and in numerous DIY-related television segments and videos. Her craft-related work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The Martha Stewart Crafts Department blog, the West Elm blog, Design Sponge, and more.
